To border or not to border - that is the question?

I need some help making a decision, I've been making this class sample based on my quilt that is in this years Down Under Quilts Calendar as I'd had a few enquiries as to whether it was a class, so I have whipped this up using some of Kaffe Fassetts new range, but I can't decide if it needs borders or not, what I'm auditioning is also used in the centre strip.

So what do you think ? border or not? I unfortunately like it both ways

Hi Janine
I like the without, love the border fabric by the way but wonder if you'd be adding a border just because you think you should.

I like it without. I think my eyes would find it overwhelming with the border, even tho' I love the border fabric.
I like what you've done, btw.

I like it both ways too Janine - would auditioning the binding help? I made a strippy recently that I was certain would not need a border, but it cried out for one and looks much more "right" with (the right) one. But maybe those wonderful stripes can carry it all the way ... aren't I helpful?

I'd prefer it without the border. And like it very much!

It looks good without a border, but just for kicks, I would audition a very narrow blue border and then add a wider border using the striped fabric of the present "outside"/border. Let us know what you decide, won't you? Deb Z.

Hi Janine,

Like the quilt without the border. If you need it to be bigger then I'd go for the border but if size is not an issue then I prefer it without.

I would have to agree with the majority. I do not like the look of that fabric as a border - I think it makes it too busy and distracting - doesn't have a good flow to compliment the rest of the line of the quilt. Try others, but dont feel the need to have one at all.

Definitely without the border. I like it just as it is. The border fabric dilutes the impact of the great stripe. It's a very fun piece!

Hi Janine, my opinion is to leave the extra border off ... it is gorgeous fabric, but too busy for what you've alrady got going on, and would take away from your design. Super quilt!

I thought maybe you were going to use a wonky pieced nine patch like the centre. That might work as a border, but the other fabric is too busy and distracting. Very beautiful use of colour.

I like the border - I think it pulls everything together. I'd bind it with the stripe (if it were mine). Love this design!!

Another vote for without.
Lovely quilt either way.
